The University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston is the best place to get cancer treatment in the United States…..at least according to the magazine U.S. News and World Report.
The news magazine"s July 17, 2000 edition ranks the best hospitals in America and it has ranked the 50 best cancer treatment facilities as well.
The 11th annual survey looked at 6,247 institutions across the US. To be on the list hospitals had to be a member of the Council of Teaching Hospitals or have at least nine out of 17 key technological services. To be ranked in the cancer treatment area hospitals had to have performed the required number of cancer treatment procedures over the last three years to make the cut.
Key factors for the U.S. News staff were quality of care, reputation, death rates (mortality), and such factors as technology and nursing care.
The Top 10 cancer hospitals by U.S. News and World Report:
- University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston
- Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York
- Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore
- Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN
- Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC
- University of Chicago Hospitals
- Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston
- UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles
- Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo
- Clarian Health Partners, Indianapolis
Practice Makes Perfect
In something of a case study the magazine looked at medical journal reports on surgery for pancreatic cancer as well as other medical procedures. As you might expect, hospitals that do complicated procedures more often get better results for their patients. The magazine informs patients they should find out how many times a key procedure has been done and what the outcomes were.
